REVIEW: Pantene 3 Minute Miracle

Lately, I have been worrying about my hair because aside from thinning (ugh, genetics!), it has become extremely damaged and sensitive due to all the coloring (plus retouching), post-trauma from bleaching and curling (now I'm slowly cutting the affected area off) that I  do to my hair. Well, I consider half of my hair practically dead but I don't wanna shorten my hair easily so i just deal with it through products that can help restore the problems of split ends, dryness, roughness, etc .

So when I got this news from Sample Room that Pantene is introducing a new version of the Total Care conditioner which I had used back in college when I had that really long straight hair which needed intensive and preventive products for damage management, I definitely wanted to try it. I didn't have any problem with Pantene before even with my oily and dandruff-prone scalp (I have always used Head & Shoulders as my shampoo then I use other conditioners for special needs) so it was interesting to test the new bigger promise by Pantene-  a 3-minute damage control.

30 Things of 2014

2014 was a big year for beauty and with launches, relaunches and limited editions left and right, online or department store level, it gets exciting but also a bit overwhelming. Sometimes, I still get confused and amazed at the same time whenever I visit a cosmetics store, but below are my favorites from last year that are unique, hard-working and special in their ways!

Orange is the New Black

Ever since I bought the MAC Morange and Sounds Like Noise lipsticks a year ago, I've been interested in this shade. Whether with a plain eye makeup or a full on smokey eye, orange has become my go-to color and for me, is the new classic/staple. Now, I added more to my collection and below are my reviews!

All About Eyes

Renowned makeup artist Bobbi Brown—famous for her signature black frames—is often asked how to wear makeup with glasses. In line with her philosophy of Pretty Powerful, Bobbi teaches women how to define eyes and make them seen behind lenses. I can definitely relate to this ( I even made an LOTD years before) as a frames user and I agree that makeup should complement and not compete with glasses. It should be a harmonious mix of colors and shapes and styles. These are the key theses of the book: for statement frames, go for bolder colors and for delicate frames, choose a softer look. No matter the preferred shape of and style of frames—round or square, bold or classic—Bobbi makes it easy to create standout eye looks. And this is made possible by knowing the makeup that suits your eye, face shape, etc that Bobbi Brown navigates through her book (and through a counter service and new line of glasses soon!)

But also, Everything Eyes teaches and redefines a lot of makeup techniques that are unique to Bobbi and her philosophy of makeup as style to each individual, but this time, more instructional and step-by-step versus her last book. I will apply learnings in my next LOTD's and this book is definitely one that you would go back to and read again to remind you of style and the right cosmetics for your eyes.

The Affordable Lipsticks

My theory is that the more pigment there is in the lipstick and it doesn't dry the lips too much, then the price goes up. Unfortunately, based on experience, even in the premium department stores, there are limited options when you're searching for both true comfort and color payoff.

However, there are some affordable brands which have a pretty good level of pigment already, with nice selection of colors, AND with great comfort / wearability which is clear with semi-matte and glossy lipsticks that are available in the nearest department stores or beauty distributor.

A Pro Application

A few weeks ago, MAC launched their PRO lipsticks (click for reviews) but alongside that, I had a one-on-one with a MAC artist with regard to lipstick application. Now, if you can see the swatches, you'll know how intense the color payoff of the lipsticks and if you ask me, I won't really care about application (you just know when the product can take care of that). But then during the event, with the use of extra products like a lip primer, lip pencil, etc - I realized that I need volume for my lips. I am impressed with they can do this in minutes. Thanks, MAC!

Happy Anniversary, BYS!

BYS is a fun, fashionable and reachable brand that is making an impact in the global market as well as locally. In the past 12 months since its launch in the Philippines, BYS focused on face products such as foundation primers, a new matte foundation, crème foundation (which is a bestseller in the Philippines), and the new HD (high definition) powders - reviews coming up soon. I have reviewed nonetheless some of its lipstick lines and I was really impressed with how they value their users' value for money. With 120 stores currently, BYS has proven that it is possible to produce innovative cosmetics without exorbitant price tags, says Ed Aitken, founder of this Australian makeup brand - whom we met at the anniversary launch. Currently, BYS has shifted its focus on brows with new brow pencils, an auto brow, and a game-changing brow kit which will be in Philippine stores next month. Also, there are a lot of new products for lips and face (I swatched some below) that are truly exciting. Way to go, BYS, and congratulations on your success!

T.LeClerc Paris L'hiver

I think that T.LeClerc is one understated makeup brand because always, the new collections say inimitable makeup. After Paris l’Été earlier this year, T. LeClerc presents chapter 2. "The sky is awash in wintry colours, the first snowflakes fall on the Eiffel Tower. Elegant and timeless like Parisian women, the great tower watches over the City of Light. On the banks of the Seine, a woman is walking. Her complexion is light and her cheeks are rosy, cooled by the winter winds. Under the brim of her hat, one can see her subtly enhanced eyes and her lips with powdery colours. She is beautiful and naturally elegant."  The “winter touch” by T. LeClerc Must-have products in understated, refined colours and a touch of French-style “Art Deco” inspiration and below are the reviews!

Fractional Needling

It's been years since I went to a dermatologist or a skin clinic. I remembered doing these often when I was in still school when all of those problems would come out, but since I'm really a heavy makeup user until now, and add the level of stress and late nights that I encounter everyday, I definitely needed to treat my skin. So I went to Flawless for the first time and asked them to treat my skin condition.

3.1 PHILLIP LIM FOR NARS NAILS

NARS nails is a serious nail brand in the market. Earlier this year, Liz Lanuzo and I were talking to Julia Arenas (during our El Nido trip where I painted again my nails with the brand) about how brilliant the staying power and color of the one I got from the NARS x Pierre Hardy nail collection which is still alive! Despite the price, it really doesn't chip off too easily with good color payoff for weeks.

Now, there's another color collection in collaboration with 3.1 Phillip Lim that I have been eyeing on early this year when I heard about it, and a renovation of their permanent line. I mean, I don't know with NARS fans but for me, NARS nails is already perfect. I'm excited to share reviews of these with you soon!

Women and Holy Week

So I know that this is a beauty blog, that I haven’t updated this with product reviews and stuff, and that It’s a Good Friday today, but I just know that this might be right. After all, this blog was born out of the ways that women, or people alike, are seen.

Last night, I came from a Visita Iglesia with my family. I really like spending time with them during these days, especially in a religious setting. I needed to spend time for Him especially, and reflect on a lot of things. Everything was really beautiful, especially as you can see below, I was really stunned by the statue of Mother Mary in the church where I grew up in Valenzuela, Our Lady of Fatima.

Mom with my Aunties at Intramuros near the church
And after, I planned to watch one of the DVD movies that I haven’t seen before. I wanted to watch Passion of the Christ but I told myself that I should watch it on a Good Friday, so I watched The Mistress. I just knew that a Bea Alonzo – John Lloyd movie could be a very interesting one, something that could always influence everything and reflect Filipino love, culture, morality, power and a lot of things – as One More Chance did in a way that I don’t agree with.

Before the climax, I was really falling in love with it – in a film-technical level but also on a deeper one:  The flaws and openness in a relationship, some truths about mistresses and how finally one mistress could be saved by a boy who really  loves her no matter what, the son who would pursue his dreams despite what his parents like for him, the way Filipinos care for families, and help each other believing in the concept of “utang na loob”  that's so strong it made the mistress a mistress.
But as with any Bea-John Lloyd movie, Star Cinema would always put the woman in a lower level in the ending, oh well, aside from a “deus ex machina” wherein a person would die and everything will be ok. It always has to be that a woman is placed in a position where she has to suffer and pay real hard.

My favourite feminist and literature teacher Katrina Stuart Santiago has always taught me to think critically and she wrote a book called Of Love and Other Lemons where I realized the limitations of feminism, especially on a very powerful idea called “Love”. What I greatly learned from the book is that we need to speak, because no one will.

Why did I feel that Bea needed to apologize to everyone? Shouldn’t it be John Lloyd and the old man really meaning to say sorry to her? Why did she even have to pay “utang na loob” in that way and be required to be sin?  Why didn’t the movie end in a happy way where it was the perfect plot for a man and a woman to finally be together, love unconditionally and be free? If it was love of the family, or the love of the people in the corporation – which by the way oppressed and caged Bea and John Lloyd respectively (maybe because of how strong Filipinos love their families), why is it also not about love of the oppressed woman who's always treated like shit?

I’m so frustrated I had to write this right away. I already planned on reviewing a movie I also watched last December in the MMFF called “Aswang” where these creatures continue to be carnivores, and couldn’t do what is right and just, JUST because they love their families. Maybe sometimes we have to consider using “love for the family” when rationalizing our deeds. I love my family and here in our country we are taught to do everything for them. AND I WILL.  But I always believe that it should be in a way that would not step on people along the way. And if I will be placed in that position, I will really really try.

At the end of it, I just remembered back in college, in Theology classes, I really liked reading how Jesus loved and accepted the oppressed people – women, sex workers, all kinds of people discriminated against, and everyone not given a right treatment. And that’s how I’ve always believed in Christ. And stayed with faith. Because I know that even with how imperfect I am, the LGBT, or Bea Alonzo, or mistresses, or the poor people, or women, He would still die for me. He will for everyone, regardless of anything. And I will be forever thankful, loving and serving a life that is for Him.

Have a Good Friday, girls!

BDJ Box March 2014

I have never really tried (or fully reviewed) the famous LA brand (except for its brow product which I lost last year) and while I am always drawn to its packaging, I still rely on my peers' reviews. But now I have an exclusive box and I am so excited to share with you my initial thoughts on its world-famous products!

A Beauty Philosophy

In beauty, I never forget to look at a brand's philosophy. There, I see the rationale and goals behind products, technologies and innovations and that way I truly know what I'm consuming. I also get to know how sincere the brand is and how you two can be connected.
