Color Riche L'extraordinaireWednesday, December 31, 2014
Color Riche is one of my popular posts in the blog as it is one of the first lipsticks that I reviewed in detail. It is one of those pigmented yet affordable lipsticks available in department stores. Now, With Color Riche L’Extraordinaire, L'Oréal Makeup Designer / Paris has created "a new generation of makeup - with color more intense than a lipstick, luster more sophisticated than a gloss, and comfort that is smoother than a balm." Below is my rating of this luxurious Parisian product, with justifications.
At first glance, I thought it was a lipstick with the usual L'Oreal Paris Color Riche packaging. L'extraordinaire claims better qualities than the usual lipstick, balm or gloss and it would be great to understand the chemistry behind these lip products.

After years of research, L’Oréal Paris brings an “oil and color alchemy” which adds a new dimension to color for the most perfect lips. “L’Extraordinaire is much more than a traditional lipstick, gloss, or a balm,” shared Trisha Chua, the Group Product Manager for L’Oréal Makeup Designer/Paris. “Whereas traditional waxes found in traditional lipsticks fade and mask the color pigments in the formula, the precious oils in L’Extraordinaire allow these pigments to reveal their full intensity.”

And that is the reason why there is a huge segmentation between lip sticks and glosses and balms. I have always talked about matte lipsticks being so good and pigmented yet uncomfortable to the lips, and glosses or semi-matte ones that are don't give much color pay off. Still, there are pigmented AND glossy lipsticks in the market but they still dry the lips.
For me, one factor to really consider is the quality of oils/waxes that are used in the lip product. It's not just about whether or not it's pigmented/matte/glossy. We should look at the ingredients used, the nutrition that can brought about by these, and how these don't empower the pigments present. For L'Oreal, which I really loved upon 1 week of testing, the L'extraordinaire lippies contain Argan oil, lotus flower oil, camelia seed oil and rosa canina fruit oil, to give a unique feeling of comfort and care. “You would immediately notice that the color on your lips is immediately magnified with just one swipe of Color Riche L’Extraordinaire,” added Chua. “That’s because the micro-drops of magnifying oil in L’Extraordinaire come up to the surface and enhances the lip color. The result? A luster finish more refined than a gloss.”
And I agree. Outside (through the packaging), and inside, it indeed functioned as a lipstick, lip gloss and a balm. Versus the usual lip gloss, it has a more intense color but I also liked how this softens and volumizes the lips, with the right amount of gloss, and isn't too heavy or shiny on the lips.

In terms of color, I tried first the lighter shades to determine its color payoff and it delivered. Even with just one layer of the product (see the two photos below), it revealead the color right away which can also be built up for intensity.

The finish is glossy, yet has a right balance of sheen/color. The consistency is perfect. The scent is citrusy/fruity. The color/moisture lasts for 5-6 hours.

The line also has 10 shades available, with long-lasting nail lacquers with rich pigments to compliment them. Below are the swatches of the lighter shades I liked, the Rose ones, which L'Oreal has always perfected in making - 201, and 102, Rose Finale and Rose Symphony, respectively. I tested them for 2 weeks and there was super minimal chipping. The brush is also very nice because it paints the whole nails (even my big nail size).

Overall, this is one lip product (color+balm+gloss) that I can wear everyday as it gives balanced color, moisture and volume. I have been over my matte/super pigmented lipstick phase and this is something that I can really use and indulge in. While it is still not as pigmented as semi-matte lipsticks, it can be used alone for a sheer effect or on top of an opaque lip color, with its extraordinary care and comfort. It is as quite as luxurious as Lancome's Gloss in Love when it comes to the care, but is less expensive but is more comforting and luxurious (less shimmers) than the Maybelline Lip polish line that I reviewed earlier this year.
